About three or four weeks ago I was in my local Salvation Army shop on Dumbarton Road in Glasgow. Actually I was only gazing through the window at a beloved 1980s sampling keyboard of old. Yamaha VSS-30… if you’re asking / selling. I thought I would ask to buy it.
When told I had to wait two weeks till it went into the public shop, at 9am on the table. I decided to get there at 9am. In fact, I got there at 8.30am just to be sure I would get this tactile vocal manger, this retro n-n-n-n-nineteen paul hardcastle stylee beauty. So beloved of “circuit benders”
Imagine my heavy heart when I spied the queue at the door.
But three were grannies. One was an indie-kid. I knew what he wanted. I resigned myself to defeat.
-Excuse me, are you here for the keyboard?
-yes.
-Ach, it’s yours then. Fair play to you.
-I’ve been here since 8am
-it’s the early bird etc.
So, I decided to try ebay. I was in retro-lust. I bid on one! I failed. I bid on another. Christ it went for £120!!!
I then decided, after much noodling on message boards that the VSS200 was almost as good, if not better in some respects. I bid again on ebay. I lost it. But it went back on sale! I bid £45 (they wanted £80) and got it plus £15 p&p.
I have just spent my first 24 hours with the machine. If you played the soundfiles that were me!
